As Donald Trump has won the Presidency – unless he gets massively cheated by a rogue Electoral College – it’s nice to sit back and remember that this wasn’t shocking, this wasn’t unexpected, and unless you were being paid as part of some concerted effort to get Clinton into office you probably saw Trump coming. Here is proof of being two for two on political happenings in 2016 and correctly analysing the political situation in order to make a profit (ID’s removed on bets for the second screenshot, this is on betfair.com)
There is a lot to say about this election, and why it was pretty obvious to anyone looking from a neutral point of view that both of these situations were going to occur. In fact this win was predicted as far back as mid nomination stage before he even became the nominee. As more happens across the globe in Europe in 2017 with the French and German elections, Austrian Presidency rerun as well as the Italian referendum, more analysis will be done to spot whether any of these results will be particularly obvious as well.
Why Trump Choosing Mike Pence Was the Smartest Possible Political Move and Bodes Well For His Presidency
Now I know what you’re thinking, ‘oh piss off, there’s no way that it is a good thing that this guy picked Mike Pence, he’s so bad for LGBT rights, science and so on and the Republicans are just waiting for any excuse to impeach Trump and install Pence who represents them better’. Right, but hold on for just a second and let me explain.
Pence is almost an existential threat to the Democrats, his viewpoints are totally off kilter with anything the Democrats believe in and value. Pence was ostensibly a peace offering, an olive branch to the Republican side by a huge political outsider. But he’s a sword of Damocles to Donald Trump, or so everyone would have you believe, but it isn’t the case. The Democrats, of the two parties, are most likely to want to push to impeach Donald Trump. But they cannot, because if they actually managed to do so then Pence comes next. The Republicans on the other hand who want Pence, are not only afraid of getting wiped out by the angry Donald Trump base, but they are definitely not going to impeach a party President even if Donald Trump is only really a Republican on paper. So you have a situation where the Republicans would like to impeach him secretly but won’t ever pull the trigger even if they’d support a Democrat coup, and you have a situation where the Democrats would love to impeach him secretly but would be terrified of the consequences so would never pull the trigger because Pence is a terrifying prospect when the Republicans have the house and the Presidency also.
It’s totally bizarre, he keeps arriving at these amazingly sewn up situations. Donald Trump in reality is very much a Democrat in policy from the 90’s. Don’t forget that back then Clinton didn’t support gay marriage (though Trump does), and Clinton also wanted to deport all illegals, which Trump still does. In fact it is only his rhetoric on Planned Parenthood which was recently ring fenced by Obama so no longer an issue, and his rhetoric on banning Muslims, as well as climate change that make him divisive at all. After all it was Al Gore that started to push the American political realm into care for the environment for the better.
So now we have a situation where Donald Trump has insulated himself from attacks from Democrats because the alternative is far scarier to them, and he’s protected from the Republicans by his platform, and by picking Pence in the first place. It really is incredibly clever, almost remarkable. I don’t know if he is doing it on purpose. If it means he’s very intelligent despite never having joined the political fray before, or if he just has an ability to delegate and pick the most amazing team possible which speaks well to his ability to delegate and is promising for his presidency – because after all that is what a President must do above all, delegate and skillfully pick the right people for the right jobs.
If his Presidential campaign is anything to go on, and his pick of Pence, then he will be quite formidable in office.
After early 2 years of wondering, people overy the world woke up to this BBC headline declaring that the MH370 Malaysia Airlines plane crashed into water. This comes from experts, who clearly saw the article about how the pilot flew a similar route into the ocean on his home flight simulator and so expertly deduced it. Thanks expert, thanks BBC.
